The Downside of Taking Selfies

The VoxPop that the Stessu Team has done a few weeks ago has got different responses and feelings about selfies. This post will focus on the negative aspects of selfies by going through two events that occurred in different continents.

Tourist dies after attempting to take a selfie in Thailand

A 33-year-old French tourist was reported of falling from a waterfall while attempting to take a selfie in Thailand on Thursday.

A friend of his said that “he was trying to take a selfie and then slipped and fell.” It was reported that the country is considered a safe destination for tourists and on average has around 35 million visitors per year.

Tourists enjoy the flooded Venice while locals in tears

Various tourists have been posing for selfies in Venice as it is currently flooded while residents are afraid of the consequences.

The disastrous flooding, in fact the most severe in 50 years, is causing damage to businesses and precious art and architecture that Venice is so popular for.

These two events have shown that people are willing to go to all extremes to get their so called perfect selfies to eventually share on social media. They do not think twice to risk their life or disrespect historical sights as long as they get the unusual and unique selfie.
